Reviews, reputation and the trust signals search engines read

22 June 2026 · 7 min read · Coselli, Bournemouth

Reviews are ranking signals, conversion drivers and AI source material at the same time. Here is how to generate them systematically.

Reviews do three jobs simultaneously: they push you up the map pack, they convert visitors who are already on the fence, and they supply the language AI assistants use when describing your business. Very few small businesses treat them as a system.

Where reviews matter

  • Google — the primary signal for local ranking and by far the highest priority.
  • Industry platforms — Checkatrade, Trustpilot, Houzz, sector registers. Choose one, not five.
  • Facebook and social proof surfaces where your audience already looks.
  • Your own site — quoted with the reviewer's name and location, linked to the source.

A system that runs itself

  1. 01Define the trigger: job completed, order delivered, appointment finished.
  2. 02Automate the ask — a text message with one short link beats an email with three.
  3. 03Make it personal: the person who did the work should be the one asking.
  4. 04Track the rate. Below 20% of customers responding, the friction is in your ask, not your customers.

Never incentivise reviews with discounts or gifts. It violates Google's policies, and platforms increasingly detect the pattern.

Handling negative reviews

  1. 01Reply within 48 hours, calmly, once.
  2. 02Acknowledge the specific issue, state what you have done, offer to continue offline.
  3. 03Do not argue, do not restate the whole history, do not name individuals.
  4. 04Remember the audience: the next hundred people reading it, not the reviewer.

A well-handled two-star review converts better than a wall of flawless five-stars nobody quite believes.

Experience, expertise, authority, trust

Google's quality guidance emphasises demonstrated first-hand experience. On a small business site that means named people with real bios, dated case studies with outcomes, visible accreditations, a real address and phone number, and clear terms. These are not ranking hacks — they are the evidence that makes everything else believable.

Reviews and AI answers

When an assistant is asked to recommend a local supplier, it leans heavily on review volume, recency, rating and the wording of the reviews themselves. Reviews that name the specific service and location make you far easier to recommend for those exact queries.

Frequently asked

Can I remove a bad review?
Only if it breaches platform policy — spam, off-topic, or from a non-customer. Otherwise the effective response is a good public reply plus a steady flow of newer positive reviews.
Should I add review schema to my site?
You can mark up reviews genuinely displayed on your own site, but self-serving aggregate rating markup for your own business is restricted. Never fabricate ratings.
