AI Search

AI search visibility: how to get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews

20 July 2026 · 11 min read · Coselli, Bournemouth

AI assistants answer a growing share of the questions your customers ask. Being the source they quote is a discipline of its own — and it is largely winnable.

A meaningful share of commercial questions now get answered without a click. The customer asks an assistant, gets a synthesised answer, and either acts on it or asks a follow-up. If your business is not among the sources that answer is built from, you are invisible for that query no matter where you rank.

How AI systems pick sources

Broadly, three mechanisms are at work, often combined:

  1. 01Retrieval from a live search index — the assistant runs searches and reads the top results. Classic SEO still decides who gets read.
  2. 02Model knowledge from training data — what the model absorbed about your brand from across the web.
  3. 03Corroboration — the model favours claims repeated consistently across independent sources.

That third point is the one most businesses miss. A fact that appears only on your own website is a claim. The same fact on your site, your Google listing, a directory, an industry register and a press mention is a fact.

What makes a page quotable

  • Answers stated directly, in the first two sentences under a clear heading. Assistants extract passages, not whole pages.
  • Specific, checkable facts: prices, timescales, dimensions, coverage areas, qualifications, dates.
  • Clean semantic HTML — real headings, lists and tables. Content locked in images, sliders or client-side rendering may never be read.
  • Named authorship and a visible last-updated date.
  • Self-contained sections that make sense when lifted out of context.

Write so that any single section, quoted alone, is still accurate and still attributable to you.

Structure the page for extraction

A pattern that works consistently: a heading phrased as the question a person would ask, a direct 40–60 word answer, then the detail, examples and caveats. Repeat down the page. Add a genuine FAQ block at the end with FAQPage schema.

DoInstead of
"A bathroom refit in Bournemouth typically takes 10–14 days.""Timescales vary depending on your project."
"We serve Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch.""We cover the local area and beyond."
"Founded 2014; 400+ installations completed.""Years of trusted experience."

Technical requirements

  • Server-render your content. Many AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript.
  • Do not block AI crawlers in robots.txt unless you have decided you do not want the visibility — check for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended.
  • Ship Organization, Article and LocalBusiness schema so entities are unambiguous.
  • Keep pages fast; fetch timeouts mean your page is simply skipped.

Build corroboration off-site

  1. 01Keep your Google Business Profile, directory listings and social profiles factually identical.
  2. 02Get mentioned in places that discuss your category — local press, supplier sites, industry bodies, community sponsorships.
  3. 03Publish data or opinions worth citing: real pricing ranges, survey results, case study numbers.
  4. 04Answer questions publicly where your audience asks them, under your real business name.

Measuring it

There is no Search Console for AI answers yet. Practical proxies: ask the major assistants your core commercial questions monthly and record whether you appear; watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot in analytics; track branded search volume, which tends to rise as AI mentions increase.

None of this replaces SEO. The overwhelming majority of AI answers are assembled from pages that rank. AI visibility is SEO plus clarity, plus verifiability, plus consistency across the web.

Frequently asked

Is AI search optimisation different from SEO?
It overlaps heavily. Ranking well is the entry ticket; the extra work is writing extractable, factual, well-structured answers and making the same facts consistent across the wider web.
Should I block AI crawlers?
Only if you actively do not want to be represented in AI answers. For most small businesses, being quotable is a growth channel, not a threat.
How do I tell if AI is sending me traffic?
Check referrals from assistant domains in analytics, watch for rises in branded search, and test your key questions in the assistants monthly.
