Measuring SEO performance: the metrics that mean something
8 June 2026 · 7 min read · Coselli, Bournemouth
Rankings are a proxy. Traffic is a proxy. Here is how to measure the SEO numbers that actually predict enquiries and revenue.
Most SEO reporting measures activity rather than outcome. A useful measurement setup answers one question every month: did search bring us more of the right customers than last month, and why?
The minimum viable setup
- 01Google Search Console verified, with the sitemap submitted.
- 02Bing Webmaster Tools verified — cheap, and it feeds Copilot.
- 03Analytics with conversion events for every meaningful action: form submit, call tap, booking, purchase.
- 04Call tracking if the phone is your main channel; otherwise your best-performing pages are invisible.
Metrics worth watching
| Metric | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Conversions from organic | The only number that pays wages |
| Non-brand clicks | Growth from people who did not already know you |
| Impressions by query group | Early signal of relevance shifting |
| Pages earning clicks | Breadth of the site actually working |
| Average position for money terms | Progress on the queries you chose |
| Indexed page count vs published | Technical health |
Separate brand from non-brand in Search Console with a query filter. Brand traffic follows your marketing generally; non-brand is what SEO is earning you.
Metrics to stop reporting
- Keyword rankings in isolation — personalised, volatile and often meaningless.
- Domain authority scores — third-party estimates, not Google metrics.
- Bounce rate on informational pages — a fast, complete answer looks identical to failure.
- Total sessions without segmenting the source.
A monthly review that takes twenty minutes
- 01Conversions from organic, this month versus last and versus the same month last year.
- 02Non-brand clicks and impressions trend.
- 03Top five rising and top five falling pages — investigate the fallers.
- 04New queries appearing in the last 28 days; these tell you what to write next.
- 05Indexing errors and Core Web Vitals status.
- 06One action for next month based on the above.
Seasonality matters more than most reports admit. Always compare year on year as well as month on month, especially in trades, hospitality and tourism-driven markets like Bournemouth.
Frequently asked

- What is a good conversion rate from organic traffic?
- For local service businesses, 2–5% of organic visitors taking a meaningful action is typical; high-intent service pages often exceed 10%.
